How to Sell Your Watch Safely in the UK

1 June 2026

If you're thinking about selling a watch, you have three realistic routes: sell privately, sell to a dealer, or consign to auction. Each has a different balance of price, speed, and risk — and the right choice depends on what matters most to you.

Selling privately, usually through classifieds or a watch forum, generally gets you the highest headline price because there's no dealer margin or auction commission in between. But it comes with real friction: you're responsible for authenticating your own watch to a stranger, arranging safe payment, and handling shipping or a face-to-face meet with someone you don't know. Payment fraud and counterfeit cash are not rare in private watch sales, and if something goes wrong, you have very little recourse.

Selling to a dealer is the fastest and lowest-risk route. You get a firm offer, usually within a day, and paid immediately once you accept — no waiting on a buyer, no listing fees, no risk of a bounced payment. The trade-off is that the offer will be below full retail resale value, because the dealer is taking on the cost, time and risk of finding the next buyer. A good dealer will be transparent about how they've arrived at a figure.

Auction houses sit in between. They can achieve strong prices for rare or desirable references with genuine bidding competition, but you'll pay seller's commission (often 10–20%), wait weeks or months for the sale to complete, and there's no guarantee the watch reaches your reserve.

A fourth option worth knowing about is sale-or-return: you leave the watch with a dealer, it goes into their stock and gets marketed properly, and you only get paid once it actually sells — at a price you've agreed upfront. It's slower than a straight sale but usually nets you more than an instant cash offer, without the hassle of a private sale.

Whichever route you choose, get the watch properly valued first. I offer free, no-obligation valuations and can talk you through which option — instant purchase, part-exchange, or sale-or-return — makes the most sense for your specific watch.
